The Meath Choir- Having a Blast!

The Meath Choir was formed over 9 years ago by Choir Blast’s founder Phoebe Gaydon and staff at The Meath Epilepsy Charity.

We are just a stone’s throw away from Godalming’s Choir BlastFestival and members of The Meath Choir have enjoyed performing at the festival since its inception in 2023. The Meath Choir are currently rehearsing for their performance at the forthcoming busy community event. They can’t wait  to take to the stage alongside Choirs from across the UK at ChoirBlast!

Every Wednesday morning, our Skills Centre is filled with the joyous sound of The Meath Choir rehearsing! Choir members come together to sing and sign in Makaton as they perfect their repertoire.

The Skills Centre provides an enabling and vibrant day service for the people we support. Our activities are on offer Monday-Friday and champion life-long learning.

Social & Well-being Benefits

The act of regular communal singing has numerous social and well-being benefits. For adults with complex epilepsy and disabilities, this is evermore the case. Unfortunately, the risks of depression, anxiety and loneliness are greater in adults with epilepsy and disabilities.

Alongside the social benefits of meeting each week to sing with choir members who live in different houses from across The Meath, choir members also enjoy the support of friendly volunteers from the local community, many of whom are members of Godalming or Guildford Jazz Choirs.

Amy, shares what she enjoys most about being a member of The Meath Choir,

“What I like about the Skills Centre is having a purpose to my day. I absolutely love choir practice, it just makes me feel so happy!”

Meanwhile, fellow choir member Andrew explained that he finds the sessions “very relaxing and therapeutic.”

Choir leader Phoebe Gaydon comments on the choir’s progress over the past 9 years.

“Leading The Meath Choir has been wonderful! Every week our rehearsals are filled with laughter and joy and the physical and social benefits of singing together are huge. Performing on stage at events adds a new dimension to the choir’s sense of achievement, it’s always wonderful to perform every year at The Meath’s spectacular Carol’s at St Clement Danes Church in London and in recent years to join the fun and take to the stage at ChoirBlast!”

Currently The Meath Choir are in rehearsal for their performance at Choir Blast on Saturday 13th June and have enjoyed learning a new selection of songs, including Makaton signing. Among their current favourites is the upbeat ‘I’m a believer’ by Neil Diamond and a poignant rendition of ‘Umbrella’ by Rhianna. The lyrics to ‘Umbrella’ provide a remarkably well-fitting description of the friendship, camaraderie and support that is found at The Meath, in peer to peer and staff to resident support.

Don’t miss The Meath Choir at Choir Blast! They will be performing at 1pm on the main stage at the Bury’s Field, Godalming on Saturday 13th June.

“Now that it’s rain’ more than ever, know that we still have each other, you can stand under my umbrella…”
